ALLERGIC RHINITIS
ALLERGIC RHINITIS
Allergic rhinitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the nasal passages that occurs when the immune system reacts to certain allergens present in the environment. These allergens may include dust mites, pollen, animal dander, mold, smoke, or air pollution.
When a person who is sensitive to these allergens is exposed to them, the immune system releases chemicals that cause inflammation and irritation in the nasal lining. This leads to symptoms such as sneezing, nasal blockage, runny nose, and itching of the nose or throat.
Allergic rhinitis may be seasonal, occurring during certain times of the year when pollen levels are high, or it may be perennial when symptoms occur throughout the year due to continuous exposure to indoor allergens such as dust.
Although allergic rhinitis is not usually a serious condition, persistent symptoms can affect sleep, concentration, and daily productivity. Proper management can help reduce the frequency and severity of symptoms and improve overall quality of life.
Common Symptoms Patients May Notice
- Frequent sneezing
- Runny nose
- Nasal congestion or blockage
- Itching in the nose or throat
- Watery or itchy eyes
- Post-nasal drip
- Reduced sense of smell
- Headache or sinus pressure
Ayurvedic Perspective
In Ayurveda, allergic rhinitis is often correlated with Vata-Kaphaja Pratishyaya, where an imbalance of Kapha and Vata doshas affects the nasal passages and upper respiratory tract.
Kapha dosha is responsible for lubrication and mucus production in the body. When Kapha becomes aggravated due to factors such as cold foods, exposure to allergens, or weakened digestion, it can lead to excessive mucus accumulation in the nasal passages and sinuses.
Aggravated Vata dosha may contribute to symptoms such as frequent sneezing, irritation, dryness, and hypersensitivity of the nasal lining.
Additionally, impaired digestive fire (Agni) and accumulation of metabolic toxins (Ama) may increase the body’s susceptibility to allergic reactions.
Ayurvedic management therefore focuses on reducing Kapha accumulation, strengthening respiratory health, improving digestion, and enhancing immunity so that the body becomes less reactive to allergens over time.
Management may include:
- Nasya therapy to cleanse and strengthen the nasal passages
- Herbal medicines that support respiratory health and immunity
- Steam inhalation therapies
- Dietary guidance to reduce Kapha imbalance
- Lifestyle modifications to minimize allergen exposure
