Greeva Vasti
Greevavasti is a specialized Ayurvedic treatment in which warm, medicated oils are poured and retained over the nape of the neck for a specific duration. A compartment or “cabin” is created on the neck using black gram flour and water, forming a ring that holds the oil in place throughout the therapy.
This treatment is primarily aimed at relieving neck pain caused by various factors. The term Greevavasti comes from Greeva, meaning neck, and Vasti, meaning to retain. Similar to the urinary bladder (Basti) which holds urine temporarily, the dough compartment retains the medicated oil, allowing its therapeutic properties to penetrate deeply into the muscles, nerves, and skeletal tissues of the neck.
Neck pain, referred to in Ayurveda as Greeva Shula, Manya Stambha, or Greeva Stambha, is increasingly common due to today’s sedentary lifestyle, prolonged sitting, poor posture, and long hours in front of computers.
