Navarakizhi
Navarakizhi is a deeply nourishing and rejuvenating Ayurvedic therapy practiced for centuries. The term Navara refers to a medicinal variety of rice traditionally cultivated in Kerala, while Kizhi means bolus or poultice. Together, Navarakizhi denotes a specialized treatment where warm boluses prepared with medicated Navara rice are applied to the body.
In this therapy, Navara rice is cooked with herbal decoctions and milk to form a soft pudding. This preparation is then tied in sterile muslin cloth to create boluses. The therapist gently massages the body using these warm boluses, dipping them intermittently in herbal decoction and medicated milk to maintain temperature and potency. The treatment may be performed locally or as a full-body rejuvenation procedure.
Navarakizhi is described in classical Ayurvedic references such as the Ashtanga Hridaya as a strengthening (Brimhana) therapy that nourishes tissues, improves muscle tone, and enhances vitality. It is particularly beneficial in neuromuscular and degenerative conditions.
This therapy is often recommended for conditions such as sciatica, spondylosis, arthritis, muscular weakness, hemiplegia, cervical disorders etc.
