Shirodhara
Shirodhara is derived from two Sanskrit words: Shiro (head) and Dhara (continuous flow). It is one of the most deeply relaxing and rejuvenating therapies in Ayurveda, designed to calm the nervous system and restore mental clarity.
In this classical treatment, a steady stream of warm medicated liquid—such as herbal oil, milk, buttermilk, or decoctions—is gently poured onto the forehead . The continuous rhythmic flow creates a profound sense of tranquility, helping the mind shift into a deeply relaxed state while supporting emotional balance.
Shirodhara is traditionally described in Ayurvedic texts like the Ashtanga Hridaya as a therapy that pacifies aggravated Doshas, especially Vata and Pitta, which are commonly responsible for stress-related and neurological imbalances.
The choice of liquid depends on the individual’s constitution and condition. Commonly used options include , Ksheerabala oil, Mahanarayan oil, other medicated oils, ghee, herbal milk preparations, and medicated buttermilk. The therapy usually lasts between 30 to 90 minutes. During the session, the patient lies comfortably on their back while the warm liquid flows in a continuous stream over the forehead, inducing deep relaxation and mental calmness.
