Patrapottali Sweda / Elakizhi
Patrapottali Sweda is a specialized Ayurvedic therapy that combines Snehan (oleation) and Swedan (sudation) simultaneously. This treatment utilizes the therapeutic properties of fresh medicinal leaves, herbal powders, and medicated oils to relieve pain, stiffness, and neuromuscular discomfort.
In this procedure, selected herbal leaves are sautéed in medicated oil along with herbal powders. The prepared mixture is then tied securely in a cotton cloth to form a bolus (Kizhi). These warm herbal boluses are applied to the body using rhythmic strokes and controlled pressure. The heat and herbal potency penetrate deeply into the tissues, enhancing circulation and promoting detoxification through perspiration.
Classical Ayurvedic references such as the Ashtanga Hridaya describe Swedana therapies as essential for relieving stiffness, improving flexibility. Patrapottali Sweda is particularly beneficial in managing musculoskeletal and neurological conditions.
