Januvasti
Januvasti, also called Janubasti, is an Ayurvedic therapy in which warm, medicated oils are poured and retained around the knee joints for a specific duration. A specially prepared dough made from black gram flour and water forms a compartment around the knees to hold the oil.
In simple terms, Januvasti is an oil-pooling treatment designed to relieve knee pain caused by various factors. The oil used is carefully selected according to the patient’s condition and needs. The term Januvasti is derived from two Sanskrit words: Janu, meaning knee joint, and Vasti, meaning to retain or hold.
Just as the urinary bladder (also called Basti in Ayurveda) holds urine temporarily, the dough ring on the knees holds the medicated oil in place. After the oil is pooled, a gentle massage (Abhyanga) is performed. This process strengthens the knee joints and surrounding muscles, improves joint function, and helps prevent further degenerative changes in the knees.
