ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a form of inflammatory arthritis that mainly affects the spine. It causes inflammation in the vertebrae, which may lead to chronic pain and stiffness in the lower back.

Over time, prolonged inflammation may cause some of the vertebrae to fuse together, reducing flexibility and affecting posture.

The condition usually begins in early adulthood and may gradually progress if not managed properly. Pain and stiffness are often worse in the morning or after periods of inactivity.

AS may also affect other joints, ligaments, and sometimes the eyes or other organs.

Ayurvedic Perspective

In Ayurveda, ankylosing spondylitis may be correlated with conditions caused by the aggravation of Vata dosha, particularly affecting the spine, joints, and connective tissues. Vata governs movement, nerve impulses, and the proper functioning of the musculoskeletal system. When Vata becomes imbalanced, it may lead to dryness, stiffness, pain, and restricted mobility in the spinal region and surrounding joints.

The aggravated Vata can gradually affect the vertebral joints, ligaments, and supporting structures of the spine, leading to symptoms such as chronic back pain, morning stiffness, reduced flexibility, and difficulty in movement. Over time, the condition may cause progressive rigidity of the spine if not managed appropriately. Factors such as improper posture, irregular lifestyle, excessive physical strain, inadequate nourishment of tissues, and long-standing metabolic imbalance may contribute to the aggravation of Vata and deterioration of spinal health.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, the condition may also involve the accumulation of Ama (metabolic toxins) due to impaired digestion and metabolism. These toxins may obstruct the normal functioning of bodily channels and further aggravate Vata, resulting in inflammation, stiffness, and degeneration in the spinal structures.

Ayurvedic management focuses on pacifying aggravated Vata, improving circulation, nourishing spinal tissues, and restoring flexibility and mobility. Therapeutic approaches may include specialized external treatments that help reduce stiffness, relax muscles, and enhance circulation around the spine.

Management may include:

  • Herbal medicines supporting joint health
  • Oil-based therapies improving spinal mobility
  • Therapies reducing inflammation and stiffness like Abhyangam , Kashayadhara, Ksheeradhara, Swedanam, Avagaham, Medicated Bandages, Snehapanam etc
  • Lifestyle guidance supporting spinal health
