CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS
CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS
Cervical spondylosis refers to degenerative changes in the cervical spine caused by wear and tear of the spinal discs, joints, and ligaments.
With aging, the discs between the vertebrae may lose hydration and elasticity. This may lead to reduced cushioning between the bones of the spine.
Degeneration of spinal structures may result in neck pain, stiffness, and sometimes nerve compression.
Modern lifestyle factors such as prolonged computer use, poor posture, and sedentary habits may increase the risk of cervical spine problems.
Common Symptoms Patients May Notice
- Persistent neck pain
- Stiffness in the neck
- Pain radiating to shoulders or arms
- Headaches
- Tingling or numbness in the arms
- Reduced neck mobility
Ayurvedic Perspective
In Ayurveda, cervical spondylosis may be associated with the aggravation of Vata dosha affecting the cervical vertebrae and surrounding structures of the neck. Vata governs movement and nerve functions in the body, and when it becomes imbalanced, it may lead to pain, stiffness, and restricted neck mobility.
Degeneration of tissues, dryness in joints, and weakening of the cervical structures are considered signs of Vata imbalance. Patients may experience symptoms such as neck pain, stiffness, radiating pain to the shoulders or arms, numbness, tingling sensations, headaches, and reduced range of neck movement. Factors such as prolonged sitting, poor posture, repetitive strain, aging, or degenerative spinal changes may contribute to the aggravation of Vata.
In some cases, the accumulation of Ama (metabolic toxins) due to impaired digestion may obstruct the body’s channels and further aggravate Vata, worsening pain and inflammation in the cervical region.
Ayurvedic management focuses on pacifying Vata, nourishing spinal tissues, improving circulation, and reducing stiffness.
Management may include:
- Medicated oil therapies for cervical spine
- Herbal medicines supporting bone and joint health
- Therapies improving spinal mobility
- Postural correction guidance
