FROZEN SHOULDER

Frozen shoulder is a condition in which the shoulder joint becomes stiff and painful due to inflammation and thickening of the joint capsule.

The condition usually develops gradually and progresses through stages. Initially, shoulder pain may occur during movement, followed by increasing stiffness that limits the ability to lift or rotate the arm.

In later stages, the shoulder may become very restricted in movement, making everyday tasks such as dressing, combing hair, or reaching overhead difficult.

Frozen shoulder is more commonly seen in individuals between 40 and 60 years of age, and it may be associated with diabetes, previous shoulder injuries, or prolonged immobilization of the arm.

With appropriate management, shoulder mobility can gradually improve.

Ayurvedic Perspective

In Ayurveda, frozen shoulder may be associated with Avabahuka, a condition caused by aggravated Vata dosha affecting the shoulder joint.

Vata imbalance may lead to dryness, stiffness, and restricted movement in the joint.

Poor circulation, injury, repetitive strain, and aging may contribute to this condition.

Ayurvedic management focuses on reducing Vata imbalance, improving circulation in the shoulder region, and restoring joint mobility.

Management may include:

  • Medicated oil therapies for shoulder joints
  • Herbal medicines supporting joint health
  • Therapies improving circulation and flexibility like Abhyangam, Podikizhi, Upanaham, Medicated Bandages, Navarakizhi, Pattrapotali Swedam, Lepanam.
  • Lifestyle guidance to improve shoulder mobility
