LUMBAR CANAL STENOSIS

Lumbar canal stenosis occurs when the spinal canal in the lower back becomes narrowed. This narrowing may place pressure on the spinal cord or the nerves that pass through the lower spine.

The condition often develops gradually due to age-related degenerative changes in the spine, including thickening of ligaments, enlargement of joints, or bulging discs.

When the spinal nerves become compressed, it may lead to pain, numbness, or weakness in the lower back and legs.

Symptoms may worsen while standing or walking for long periods and may improve when sitting or bending forward.

Lumbar canal stenosis is more common in older adults and may significantly affect mobility if not managed properly.

LUMBAR CANAL STENOSIS

Common Symptoms Patients May Notice

Patients with lumbar canal stenosis may experience:

  • Persistent lower back pain
  • Pain or numbness radiating to the legs
  • Weakness in the legs
  • Difficulty walking long distances
  • Symptoms improving when sitting or bending forward
  • Tingling sensations in the lower limbs

Ayurvedic Perspective

In Ayurveda, lumbar canal stenosis may be associated with the aggravation of Vata dosha affecting the lower spine and surrounding nerves. Vata governs movement and nerve functions in the body, and when it becomes imbalanced, it may lead to degeneration of spinal structures and narrowing of the spinal canal, causing pressure on the nerves.

Conditions such as Katigraha (lower back stiffness) and Gridhrasi (sciatica-like pain) described in Ayurvedic texts may resemble symptoms seen in lumbar canal stenosis. Patients may experience lower back pain, radiating pain to the legs, numbness, tingling sensations, muscle weakness, and difficulty in walking or standing for long periods.

In some cases, the accumulation of Ama (metabolic toxins) due to impaired digestion may obstruct the body’s channels and further aggravate Vata, leading to increased pain, inflammation, and reduced flexibility in the lower back and legs.

Management may include:

  • Herbal medicines supporting spinal health
  • Oil therapies improving spinal flexibility and circulation
  • Therapies reducing nerve irritation and inflammation like Kativasthi, Navarakizhi, Pattrapotali Sweda, Avagaham, Medicated Bandages, Lepanam, Kashayavasthi, Mathravasthi, Manual Decompression Therapy etc
  • Lifestyle guidance supporting spinal posture and mobility
