PSORIASIS
Psoriasis is a long-term inflammatory skin condition that occurs when the skin cell life cycle becomes accelerated. Normally, skin cells grow deep within the skin and slowly rise to the surface over several weeks before naturally shedding. In psoriasis, this process occurs much faster, causing skin cells to accumulate on the surface.
This rapid buildup leads to the formation of thickened patches of skin covered with silvery scales. These patches may appear red, dry, and sometimes painful or itchy. Psoriasis can occur on different parts of the body including the scalp, elbows, knees, lower back, palms, and nails.
The condition often occurs in cycles, where symptoms may worsen for certain periods (flare-ups) and improve at other times. Various factors such as stress, infections, skin injuries, certain medications, weather changes, or lifestyle habits may trigger these flare-ups.
Although psoriasis is not contagious and cannot spread from one person to another, it can significantly affect a person’s comfort, confidence, and overall quality of life. Proper management focuses on reducing inflammation, improving skin health, and minimizing triggers that may worsen the condition.
Common Symptoms Patients May Notice
Patients with psoriasis may commonly experience:
- Thick red patches of skin covered with silvery scales
- Dry or cracked skin that may sometimes bleed
- Persistent itching or burning sensation on affected areas
- Flaky scalp resembling severe dandruff
- Thickened or ridged nails
- Skin irritation that may worsen during certain seasons
- Recurrent flare-ups of skin lesions
These symptoms may vary from mild to severe depending on the individual and the extent of skin involvement.
Ayurvedic Perspective
In Ayurveda, psoriasis is often correlated with certain types of Kushta (chronic skin disorders), particularly conditions resembling Ekakushta.
This condition is believed to result from imbalance of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas, which collectively disturb the normal functioning of the skin and immune system.
- Vata imbalance may lead to dryness, scaling, and roughness of the skin.
- Pitta imbalance may contribute to redness, inflammation, and irritation.
- Kapha imbalance may result in thickened skin lesions and scaling.
In addition, weakened digestive fire (Agni) and accumulation of metabolic toxins (Ama) in the body may disturb the body’s internal balance and contribute to chronic skin disorders.
Ayurvedic management focuses on correcting these internal imbalances through detoxification approaches, improving digestion and metabolism, supporting skin health, and restoring dosha balance.
The goal is not only to reduce the visible skin symptoms but also to address the internal factors that may contribute to recurrent flare-ups.
Management may include:
- Herbal internal medicines that support skin health and systemic balance
- External herbal applications or medicated oils to soothe the skin
- Dietary guidance aimed at reducing inflammatory triggers
- Lifestyle modifications to reduce stress and support overall health
- Supportive Ayurvedic therapies that promote detoxification and skin regeneration like Kashayadhara , Thakradhara , Abhyangam , Virechanam , Vamanam.
These approaches aim to reduce inflammation, improve skin texture, and support long-term skin health.
