SCIATICA

Sciatica refers to pain caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body.

The sciatic nerve originates in the lower spine and travels through the hips, buttocks, and down each leg. When this nerve becomes compressed due to spinal conditions such as disc herniation or spinal degeneration, it may cause pain radiating from the lower back to the leg. The pain may vary from mild discomfort to severe sharp pain that affects mobility.

SCIATICA

Common Symptoms Patients May Notice

  • Lower back pain radiating to the leg
  • Tingling or numbness in the leg
  • Weakness in the leg or foot
  • Pain worsening while sitting
  • Burning sensation along the nerve pathway

Ayurvedic Perspective

In Ayurveda, sciatica is commonly correlated with Gridhrasi, a condition primarily caused by the aggravation of Vata dosha affecting the nerves, especially the sciatic nerve that runs from the lower back down to the legs. Vata governs movement and nerve functions in the body, and when it becomes imbalanced, it can lead to pain, stiffness, tingling sensations, and restricted mobility along the path of the nerve.

Aggravated Vata may disturb the normal functioning of the lower back and spinal structures, leading to radiating pain from the lower back to the buttocks, thighs, and legs. Patients may experience symptoms such as sharp or shooting pain, numbness, muscle weakness, difficulty walking, and stiffness in the lower back or legs. Factors such as prolonged sitting, improper posture, heavy lifting, excessive physical strain, degenerative spinal changes, or injury may contribute to the aggravation of Vata and compression of the sciatic nerve.

In some cases, the accumulation of Ama (metabolic toxins) due to impaired digestion and metabolism may obstruct the body’s channels and further aggravate Vata, worsening the pain and inflammation associated with the condition. This obstruction can lead to persistent discomfort and reduced flexibility in the lower back and legs.

Ayurvedic management of sciatica focuses on pacifying aggravated Vata, relieving nerve compression, reducing inflammation, and improving spinal flexibility and mobility. Various external therapies may be recommended to relax muscles, enhance circulation, and reduce pressure on the affected nerve.

Management may include:

  • Herbal medicines supporting nerve health
  • Spinal oil therapies reducing nerve irritation
  • Therapies improving spinal mobility like Kativasthi, Katipichu, Medicated Bandages, Upanaham, Choorna Pinda Swedam, Pattrapotali Swedam, Pizhichil, Manual decompression therapy etc
  • Lifestyle guidance supporting spine health
