SINUSITIS
SINUSITIS
Sinusitis refers to inflammation or swelling of the lining of the sinus cavities, which are air-filled spaces located around the nose, forehead, cheeks, and eyes. These sinuses normally produce mucus that helps keep the nasal passages moist and helps filter dust, bacteria, and other particles from the air we breathe.
When the sinus openings become blocked due to infection, allergies, or inflammation, mucus may accumulate within the sinus cavities. This buildup can create pressure within the sinuses and lead to symptoms such as nasal congestion, facial pain, headache, and thick nasal discharge.
Sinusitis may occur as an acute condition, often following a common cold or respiratory infection, or it may develop into chronic sinusitis when symptoms persist for several weeks or recur frequently.
Environmental factors such as pollution, dust exposure, allergies, and weakened immunity may increase the risk of developing sinusitis. Proper management can help relieve symptoms, clear sinus congestion, and reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
Common Symptoms Patients May Notice
- Nasal congestion or blockage
- Thick nasal discharge
- Facial pain or pressure around the cheeks, eyes, or forehead
- Headache or heaviness in the head
- Reduced sense of smell
- Post-nasal drip
- Cough, especially at night

Ayurvedic Perspective
In Ayurveda, sinusitis is commonly correlated with Pratishyaya or Dushta Pratishyaya, conditions involving inflammation and congestion of the nasal passages and sinuses.
The condition is mainly associated with imbalance of Kapha and Vata doshas. Kapha dosha contributes to excessive mucus production and accumulation within the nasal passages and sinus cavities. When Kapha becomes aggravated due to factors such as cold foods, exposure to dust, pollution, or weakened digestion, mucus may accumulate and obstruct the sinus pathways.
Aggravated Vata dosha may contribute to symptoms such as headache, facial pain, and dryness of the nasal passages.
In addition, impaired digestive fire (Agni) and accumulation of toxins (Ama) in the body may increase susceptibility to respiratory congestion and recurrent sinus infections.
Ayurvedic management therefore focuses on clearing excess Kapha from the sinus passages, improving nasal drainage, strengthening respiratory health, and enhancing immunity.
Management may include:
- asya therapy (administration of medicated oils through the nasal passages) to clear sinus congestion and support nasal health
- Steam inhalation therapies to help loosen mucus and improve sinus drainage
- Herbal internal medicines that support respiratory and sinus health
- Dietary modifications to reduce Kapha accumulation
- Lifestyle guidance to minimize exposure to allergens and pollutants
These approaches aim to reduce sinus inflammation, relieve congestion, and support long-term sinus health.
