VITILIGO

Vitiligo is a chronic skin condition that causes loss of natural skin pigment in certain areas of the body. This occurs when melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin (skin pigment), stop functioning or are destroyed.

The condition results in white patches that may appear on the face, hands, arms, feet, or other parts of the body.

Vitiligo is not contagious and does not cause physical discomfort in most cases, but it may affect a person’s appearance and emotional well-being.

The exact cause of vitiligo is not fully understood, but autoimmune factors, genetic predisposition, stress, and environmental triggers may contribute.

Common Symptoms Patients May Notice

Patients with vitiligo may notice:

  • White patches on the skin
  • Gradual increase in patch size
  • Loss of pigment in hair growing from affected skin
  • Symmetrical patches on both sides of the body in some cases

Ayurvedic Perspective

In Ayurveda, vitiligo is often correlated with Shwitra, a skin disorder caused by imbalance of Pitta dosha along with involvement of Vata and Kapha.

Digestive disturbances, toxin accumulation (Ama), and improper dietary habits may disturb skin pigmentation processes.

Ayurvedic management focuses on detoxifying the body, improving digestion, balancing doshas, and supporting healthy skin pigmentation.

Management may include:

  • Herbal internal medicines supporting skin health
  • External herbal applications for affected skin
  • Dietary guidance to improve skin balance
  • Lifestyle modifications to support overall health
